Ramayana : Vibhishana’s Choice — When Dharma Comes Before Family

As Rama’s army prepared to cross into Lanka, tension grew inside Ravana’s court.

Vibhishana, Ravana’s younger brother, advised him one last time: “Return Sita. Choose peace. Protect Lanka.”

But Ravana’s pride was stronger than wisdom. He insulted Vibhishana and rejected his counsel.

At that moment, Vibhishana faced a painful decision: Stay loyal to his brother Or stay loyal to dharma

He chose dharma. Leaving Lanka behind, Vibhishana crossed the ocean and surrendered to Rama. Some in Rama’s camp doubted him—was this a trick?

Rama answered calmly: “If someone seeks refuge with sincerity, it is my duty to protect them.”

Vibhishana was accepted—not as a traitor, but as a man who chose righteousness over blood ties.

This episode reminds us that loyalty to truth sometimes demands courage to walk away from our own side.

Is loyalty to family greater than loyalty to principles?
