My Truenas pc and 2 authenticated PC’s were stolen today. What are the risks to my data? Advice for the future?

My house was burglarized a few hours ago.

They made off with mostly home lab stuff including my truenas pc, a Mac mini & and a windows 11 pc. I am working on mentally writing off the devices as lost. I doubt the police recover them.

I have backups of the data at my parents house so it’s a monetary loss but not a sentimental loss.

As I work through this my primary concern is the data on the devices. My Mac mini & windows pc are password protected with long passwords so I feel good that barring any high level brute force password attacks or zero day exploits they will not get in.

My truenas device is also password protected with a long password.

I have a few questions

  1. Hypothetically if they were able to break into the windows 11pc or the Mac mini. Both devices already have the truenas pc added as network shares and are already authenticated to my truenas. If they put either device on the same LAN could they access the data on my truenas?

  2. What if they pull out the drives and put them in a different PC running their own Truenas? Would Truenas just allow them to read the drives off a network share or would it recognize these are from a different device?

I realize this is unlikely and most likely the devices will be parted out or sold on FB marketplace but I’m just running through scenarios in my head now.

  1. What about apps and services? I run Tailscale, Jellyfin, HA, and Immich on my truenas pc. Anything I should be concerned about there? I have not removed the device off TS. My thinking is if they plug it into TS I can remotely access the truenas device and wipe everything. Are there any other risks or concerns here I’m not accounting for?

  2. Any advice for the future on how to best secure Truenas data from physical attacks like this? I realize it’s unlikely to happen to me again but maybe others can read this and improve their own setups.

Thank you in advance for your advice!
