is there any way to break the cycle of emotional weight that dementia brings?

i think my dad’s mom has dementia and was already a pretty stubborn person, so it’s been even more difficult trying to help her now. she‘ll repeatedly call my dad until one of them tires out, and if it’s my dad who gets tired, he’ll just emotionally shut down and fall asleep in his living room chair.

i think he feels pretty alone in this, especially since he’s an only child and already has one parent who passed away, but i wanna find some way to remind him that he’s not alone and he can seek help, but i’m not sure if he’ll even accept it. he‘ll occasionally tell me (mostly my mom) about how hard it is, but if either of us bring up the idea of him visiting to temporarily help her, he gets more upset. for context, she lives across the country. their calls can get heated and have been making me more anxious than usual, but the real root of it is her inability to stay calm and seek help for herself. since my dad isn’t physically there, he can’t do much but call her.

this is mostly just a vent post, but i really do wanna find a way to make it easier for him. he tries to distance me from it all since it makes me anxious, but i just can‘t see any way this can continue without someone having a genuine breakdown
