DF64P SSP burr upgrade vs DF83V? Worth it or just an upgrade itch?
I’ve been using a DF64P for about 3 years paired with a Quickmill Aquila (rotary pump HX machine), and overall I’ve been able to make great coffee with it.
That said, I’ve never loved the grinder after some longer-term use. My main complaints are:
- The vertical design, no tilt or auger
- The workflow is messy
- Slight “budget grinder feel” compared to the rest of my setup
I’m considering two options:
Option 1: Keep the DF64P and upgrade to SSP burrs (Cast, HU, or Lab Sweet — still deciding)
Option 2: Buy a DF83V while it’s currently on sale
I’m trying to be honest with myself - I don’t want to upgrade purely for the sake of upgrading, and I’m not unhappy with my coffee, but I am itching for something different in my setup after 3-4 years. Ideally something that is nicer to use and tastes better. I have no real budget constraints, but can't justify buying a Weber or Option-O Lagom.
A few key questions:
- Would I actually notice a meaningful difference in espresso quality going from DF64P → DF83V?
- Or would SSP burrs in the DF64P get me 90–95% of the way there?
- Does the DF83V significantly improve workflow, retention, and mess compared to the DF64 platform?
- Is the upgrade more about UX and enjoyment, or genuinely noticeable in the cup?
For context:
- I drink mostly milk-based espresso
- Medium roasts
- Single dose workflow
- Not chasing ultra-light clarity shots, more balanced espresso with body and clarity
Would love to hear from people who have:
- Upgraded from DF64 → DF83V
- Installed SSP burrs in a DF64
- Or tried / compared both!
Was it worth it?
