Uh so I just found out that my mom once did jail time for murder
Putting this here because it's 4 in the morning, I (20M) just found out about all of this and I need a place for my thoughts. Probably going to be a long one because I want to get it all the details out while keeping anonymity.
For extra context, my mom has no left eye. She has a glass eyeball she wears almost 24/7 and sometimes even I forget she has only one working eye. I've asked her about it, but she never has told me the whole story. Only that it happened because of an accident and that it's best to leave it in the past. I've never asked anything further than that because I understand trauma is a bitch.
Well, today I got a Snapchat DM from an old friend from middle school. It was a link to a TikTok video and him asking if I knew anything about it. The video was kind of in the format of those True Crime podcasts. It talked about an incident from the early 1990s, where an disabled man used his 18 year old home carer/secret lover to rob a bank manager. She was supposed to pose as an hitchhiker, intentionally get the banker's car to pull over, then direct the car into nearby woods, kill the man behind the wheel and take off with the money. The man, however managed to fight back after being shot and strike the woman in the face with a knife. She told the police it was self defense when the banker tried to rape him. The case never went to court. She ended up needing extensive surgery and lost her left eye completely. (Sounds familiar?)
It's at this point where the names of the bank manager and his assistant are named and IT'S MY MOTHER'S NAME! This prompted me to look up some old news articles (thank God for digitization) and found mentions of another murder where the disabled man tried to kill a man who knew about his previous crimes and pontential intentions to talking to the police about it. My mom was the ine whi lured him to the secluded location. The man managed to survive his murder attempt and his statements led to the arrest of my mom and the disabled guy. Both pled guilty.
Now, the articles I found didn't say anything about how long my mom was in prison for. The video that started all of this said she got eight years, which is impossible since she was jailed in 1998 and I was born 7 years after that. Not to mention she was finishing university when I was born. I messaged the creator of the TikTok and asked if he could share his sources. As for what I'll do with this info next... I don't know. I see her every damn day and I know I'll never look her the same way. I'm probably going to have to talk about this with her at some point. I still don't know when that's gonna be, definitely not tomorrow though. I'm mostly afraid of her reaction, because like I said, trauma is a bitch.
If you bothered to read all of that, then congratulations and thank you. Also, any advice is appreciated.
