Verso in act 3

Why did Verso help Malicia in act 3? If he wanted the canvas erased, why didn’t he side with Renoir during the final battle? I understand he cared about her and wanted to help her, the help she truly needed was erasing the canvas?

From a storytelling perspective, it would have been really interesting if Malicia resurrected Gustavo and he took Verso’s place and you had to fight him as one of the final bosses. I release that would mean you’d only be able to choose Malicia’s ending, unless you guys can think of another way to put it up to player choice at the end.
