Help with a GFCI Breaker and Old Dryer
Hello! I need some guidance for an issue I'm having with my dryer. Recently moved into a new construction home and I have been fighting with the dryer ever since. I have an 11 year old Whirlpool Dryer (wed49stbw1) that will trip the GFCI breaker randomly during the cycle, usually between 10 to 30 minutes. I have already re-wired the terminal block to separate the ground and neutral.
I have tried both with the white wire that is attached to the unit connect and disconnected (and wrapped in electrical tape). I have checked the heating element, the element casing, visually inspected the heating element, checked the thermostat, checked the fuse, and checked the motor (tested the run and start windings, and the thermal protector), and they all are fine.
I've already had the builder send out an electrician to check the wiring and breaker. They said there were no issues with the wiring and went ahead and replaced the breaker. But the issue persists. I have a Square D panel and the breaker looks like this one.
It was suggested to me that if there isn't an issue with the dryer to try a different brand of GFCI breaker or to use a non GFCI breaker. However, from what I've read you're not supposed to use breakers that are not the same brand as the panel. And I'm concerned that using a non GFCI breaker would void my homeowner's insurance. I have thought about getting a new dryer, but what if the breaker still trips? Lastly, the new breaker has tripped 6 to 12 times while trying to troubleshoot, does it need to be replaced again? From what I've read a breaker can only trip so many times before it'll start to trip even more easily.
So, can anyone give me some pointers on what to do? Can I change the brand of breaker or use a non GFCI breaker?
