Public transportation for tourist?

Hi everyone! I’m from Malaysia and planning a trip to Los Angeles this November with a female friend.

We’re not planning to rent a car (I don’t have an international driver’s license), so we’ll be relying mostly on Metro/public transportation and maybe Uber occasionally.

We’re not considering to stay at Hollywood, and I’ve heard Koreatown can be quite crowded. Since we won’t be driving, which areas would you recommend staying in that are relatively safe, convenient for public transport, and give us good access to the main attractions?

Also, is it generally safe for two women to use public transportation in LA? Any neighborhoods we should avoid?
