Going to the gym with my partner…

I’ve been training consistently since year 11, so it’s been over 10 years. I’m not a coach or professional, but I understand programming, progressive overload, and what it takes to actually make progress.

My partner has recently started going to the gym and it genuinely makes me really happy. I love that she’s going and taking care of herself.

What I’m struggling with is that she doesn’t really push herself. She goes, but she stays very comfortable. The weights don’t really increase, the effort doesn’t seem very high, and there isn’t much structure behind what she’s doing.

It’s not unsafe or completely random. It just feels like she’s not training in a way that will actually drive real strength or physique changes.

And I’ll be honest, that’s what annoys me. Not because it reminds me of when I started. It doesn’t. I pushed myself hard from the beginning. What frustrates me is seeing the potential there and feeling like she’s leaving progress on the table by staying in her comfort zone.

I would love for us to push each other and grow together. I like intensity. I like progression. I like seeing tangible improvement. It feels meaningful to me.

Whenever I try to suggest small tweaks or encourage her to push a bit more, she shuts it down and says it’s her way of doing it.

I know I can’t control how someone else trains. I don’t want to be critical or controlling. But I also can’t ignore that it bothers me.

Has anyone dealt with wanting your partner to push harder without becoming the annoying gym coach boyfriend? How do you step back without feeling frustrated?
