Partial payment allocation for tax purposes.
Hi all,
Please consider the following example of payments in relation to a rental property by a cash basis taxpayer:
Invoice 10 has the following items -
(i) Property management fees - $500
(ii) Capital expenditure - $3000
Total payment due - $3500.
If 50% of this ($1750) is paid in December 2025, and the rest paid in 2026, should the amount in 2025 paid be prorated to the two items?
i.e:
$250 for property management fees (expensed)
$1500 for CapEx for that property (capitalized)
Would this be accurate? Thanks!
