Hey everyone, I’m a Chinese local.  I see a lot of itineraries where Xi’an is just “Terracotta Warriors + one night”, which is a pity, because if you like history, street food and walkable old neighborhoods, this city can easily be the highlight of your trip.

**Why Xi’an deserves a spot on your China itinerary (and not just for the Terracotta Warriors)**

I went to Xi’an mainly to tick off the Terracotta Warriors, but the city itself ended up being one of my favorite stops in China for history, street food and easy side trips to mountains and hot springs. If you like old cities with real layers of time, Xi’an is absolutely worth more than a quick inandout. 

**What kind of city is Xi’an?**

Xi’an is the old capital where the Silk Road once started, so everything feels a bit heavier with history than in many other Chinese cities. You get a fully intact city wall, dense old neighborhoods, busy mosques, Tangstyle plazas and big modern malls all stacked on top of each other. It’s also a great base if you want both deep history and access to nearby mountains without changing hotels every other night. 

**For history nerds: more than just the Warriors**

Yes, the Terracotta Warriors are the headline act, and they really are as impressive as people say when you walk into Pit 1 and see the scale of it. But Xi’an is fun because the history doesn’t stop there: 

* **Xi’an City Wall** – One of the few places where you can actually walk or bike on top of a complete city wall and see old rooftops on one side and modern towers on the other. Go early or near sunset for nicer light and fewer crowds. 
* **Shaanxi History Museum** – Free but needs an advance reservation; it’s packed with pieces from the Zhou to Tang dynasties and gives you context before or after you hit the big sites. 
* **Big Wild Goose Pagoda & surrounding Tangstyle area** – The pagoda itself is historic, but the surrounding plazas and evening light shows give you that “Tang Chang’an meets modern night life” vibe in one place. 
* Combine the **Shaanxi History Museum** (for context) with the **Big Wild Goose Pagoda area**, which feels like a Tangstyle theme street at night with music, lights and people in hanfu.
* If you’re into “Silk Road” vibes, I can point you to a few less touristy streets and markets where you see more local religious life and old shops, not just souvenir stands.

If you’re the kind of person who likes reading plaques and staring at old pottery, you can easily spend a full day just hopping between museums and historic sites.

**For food and neighborhoods: night markets and beyond**

A lot of people only know Xi’an for the Muslim Quarter, and it is fun: neon lights, skewers, roujiamo, cold noodles and pomegranate juice everywhere. Most foreigners only see the super crowded main road of the Muslim Quarter; even locals joke it’s a bit of a tourist trap now. The good news is:

* Two or three streets away, you can still find places where locals actually eat – better prices and better quality.​
* Beyond the famous roujiamo and biangbiang noodles, there are lots of dishes that almost never appear in English blogs but are very friendly to foreigners; I usually make a little “food checklist” for my guests so they don’t get overwhelmed by Chineseonly menus.
* Morning food is another world: small noodle shops and steamed bun places around residential blocks are where you really see daily life.

Foodwise, it’s one of the easiest cities in China to eat well without speaking Chinese, because so many places have picture menus and the dishes are pretty forgiving.

**Easy side trips from the city**

One thing I underestimated before going was how many quick side trips you can do from Xi’an without changing hotels: 

* **Mount Huashan** – A classic “famous mountain” day trip for people who like dramatic ridges, long staircases and a bit of adrenaline; you can pick routes from fairly tame to very intense. 
* **Huaqing Palace & the “Song of Everlasting Sorrow” show** – A mix of hot spring history, palace ruins and a big outdoor night performance with lasers and water effects that a lot of people rave about. 
* Smaller temples, old gates and markets around the city can easily fill an extra day if you prefer staying inside the urban area and just slowing down.

You don’t have to do any of these to enjoy Xi’an, but they’re why people often say they wish they’d stayed longer once they’re there. 

**If you’re into handson culture & crafts**

One thing many foreign visitors don’t know is that Xi’an is great for handson intangibleheritage style workshops, not just looking at things behind glass. You can spend a few hours actually making something and take it home as a very personal souvenir instead of another fridge magnet.

Some examples of what you can do here:

* Try lacquer fan making or DIY mini Terracotta Warrior figurines, where you shape or paint your own warrior inspired by the real ones.
* Learn woodblock New Year print carving and printing, or do stone rubbing and simple calligraphy based on famous Xi’an steles.
* Join a workshop to paint your own shadow puppet, make a Songstyle brocade pearl painting, or string a scented herbal bracelet with traditional Chinese medicine ingredients.
* There are also studios where they help you design and make a small Tangstyle hairpin or accessory, which is a fun combo with renting hanfu for photos.

**Practical tips that matter more here than in other cities**

* **Book the museum in advance**: Shaanxi History Museum uses a reservation system via their official account; slots go fast in peak times, so don’t just show up. 
* **Terracotta Warriors logistics**: Figure out in advance whether you want a guide; having someone explain the pits makes a big difference, and there are official guides on site as well as wellreviewed private guides people recommend by name in the subreddit. 

If you’re already planning on Beijing and Shanghai, slotting Xi’an in between gives you a very different slice of China: less futuristic than Shanghai, more compact and layered than Beijing, and with a stronger sense of “this used to be the center of the world” when you walk around at night under the city walls.
