Ghost sightings are not just spooky campfire stories.

That doubt can make witnesses feel isolated, even when their experiences are vivid, emotional, and consistent with thousands of similar reports.

What makes these sightings so terrifying is the way they happen unexpectedly.

● A figure appears at the end of a hallway.

● A voice whispers a name in an empty room.

● A shadow moves where no person could possibly be standing.

These are not distant legends. These are the kinds of real ghost sightings that visitors, staff, and investigators continue to report today.

Scariest Real Ghost Sightings in America (True Haunted Encounters)

Each location below is known not just for rumors, but for repeated witness reports, investigator documentation, and decades of chilling paranormal history.

1. The Myrtles Plantation: America’s Most Terrifying Haunted House

The Myrtles Plantation is often called one of the most haunted homes in the United States, and for good reason.

Visitors have reported seeing a woman in antique clothing standing silently near the windows.

Others have captured unexplained figures in photographs, including what appears to be a child spirit lingering near the staircases.

What makes this location so disturbing is the consistency.

Guests who know nothing about the history often describe the same sightings:

● A woman watching from the balcony

● Children running in hallways late at night

● Strange handprints appearing on mirrors

● Heavy emotional pressure in certain rooms

Paranormal investigators frequently document EVPs here, with voices responding intelligently to questions.

This is not just a haunted house.

It feels like a place where something never left. The Myrtles Plantation is known as one of the best paranormal hot spots in the world.

2. Waverly Hills Sanatorium: [The Haunted Hospital](https://www.paraghosts.com/true-paranormal-stories-from-abandoned-hospitals/) Where Spirits Still Roam

Waverly Hills is one of the most infamous haunted hospitals in America.

Thousands died here during the tuberculosis epidemic, and many believe the suffering left an imprint on the building itself.

Witnesses report:

● Shadow figures standing in doorways

● A nurse apparition pushing an invisible gurney

● Disembodied coughing sounds

● Children laughing in empty wards

● The terrifying “body chute” feeling unnaturally cold

The problem with Waverly Hills is that it does not feel like a normal abandoned place.

People describe it as emotionally heavy, almost alive.

The agitation comes from the fact that many visitors walk in expecting a thrill, then leave shaken because something felt truly present.

The solution for investigators is careful documentation, respect, and grounding.

This is one of the clearest examples of tragedy and haunting overlapping.

3. Eastern State Penitentiary: The Prison of Shadow People

Eastern State Penitentiary is not just haunted. It is oppressive and full of negative energy.

This former prison housed inmates in brutal isolation, and today, visitors report terrifying encounters such as:

● Dark shadow figures pacing inside cells

● Phantom footsteps behind them

● Loud banging sounds with no source

● Sudden cold spots that feel targeted

● Screams echoing through empty hallways

Paranormal researchers often describe Eastern State as a hotspot for darker spiritual energy, possibly because of prolonged human suffering.

If you want one of the scariest ghost sightings environments in America, this is it. This is not a playful haunting. It feels like something is always watching.

4. The LaLaurie Mansion: Haunted by True Human Horror

The LaLaurie Mansion is one of the most disturbing haunted locations in American history.

Its reputation comes from both documented cruelty and modern paranormal reports.

Witnesses claim to experience:

● Whispering voices behind closed walls

● Sudden nausea and dizziness

● Shadow forms near upper floors

● The feeling of being watched intensely

The problem here is that the haunting is tied to real suffering, which makes the energy feel heavier than a typical ghost story.

Many paranormal experts believe intense trauma can leave residual hauntings, like an emotional recording trapped in space.

This mansion is often described as spiritually unclean with a demonic energy.

5. Gettysburg Battlefield: Phantom Soldiers Still March

Gettysburg may be the most well-known battlefield haunting in America.

Thousands died here, and witnesses still report seeing:

● Apparitions of soldiers walking through fog

● Phantom cannon fire sounds

● EVPs saying “get down” or “charge”

● Ghostly campfires glowing briefly in fields

The agitation is that these sightings are often experienced by everyday tourists, not ghost hunters.

People come for history, then suddenly see something impossible.

Gettysburg remains one of the strongest examples of intelligent paranormal activity linked to historic tragedy.

6. Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum: One of the Darkest Hauntings in America

This asylum in West Virginia is infamous for reports of violent paranormal encounters.

Visitors describe:

● Doors slamming aggressively

● Shadow people rushing past

● Growling EVPs

● Sudden feelings of panic

● Apparitions of patients standing silently

The problem is that mental health institutions often held deep trauma, isolation, self cancel and neglect, which many believe contributes to spiritual unrest.

Investigators recommend extreme caution here because activity is often intense and unpredictable.
