Was imperial Japan "worse" than western colonialism?

I'm trying to understand the background around imperial Japan to better understand the more modern topic of them changing their constitution to allow a military.

(This may be insensitive so I'm sorry if I'm totally unaware, but) is what Japan did worse than what European countries have done in their colonies?

I tried to look into it but all the articles I could find seem heavily biased or full of unknowns. I saw around 5-10 million people may have died due to Japanese imperialism but I also saw the US lead to 12~ million native American deaths and 15~ million Africans were affected by the Atlantic slave trade. The British empire did a lot of bad stuff, Belgium in the Congo was bad, it just seems a bit weird that European countries are allowed to have militaries after doing bad stuff but Japan still isn't?

So I'm wondering what imperialism in Japan looked like compared to western countries. I'll use this information as well as posts in other subreddits to better understand.

Thank you!
