Undiagnosed Misophonia? But for inanimate objects. Advice?
Hey guys,
32F here.
So my sensitivity to repetitive sounds go as far back as early childhood when i had my first panic attack from a really annoying toy with this repetitive circus song that drove me nuts. Even thinking about it brought me into a state of panic.
Then it was our minivan with a broken child lock that would constantly ding if we hit a bump it would trigger, so literally we would need to pullover and slam the door hard to make it stop.
Remember the Squeaking Boots episode on Spongebob? Im definitely Mr.Krabs descending into madness.
Nowadays i have a cultivated list of all sounds that trigger me but so many posts of misophonia mention noises that come from people: chewing/lipsmacking/tapping etc.
I will say those sounds do trigger me BUT for me its mostly INANIMATE OBJECTS with repetitive sounds that freak me out, even thinking about them.
-
Ticking clocks, could never have one in the room, cant ignore it
-
Any loose rattling/squeaking/beeping in a car
3)Balloons, even the machine that blows them up is fcking annoying. Like being outside holding balloons and they smack together, it freaks me out.
-
sitcom laugh tracks, i love sitcoms but the constantly generic laugh track triggers me at some point
-
childrens toys that play music (ofc a blast from the past)
6)nowadays even arcade videogames are annoying me. e.g. played some House of the Dead after many years and constantly hearing the "RELOAD" audio triggered me and now i never want to play again
-
If im streaming a song or show and it pauses to load/ resumes, this random kind of disruption in audio is a newer type of trigger ive noticed
-
sometimes even the sound of my heels clacking as i walk
-
anything that jingles with movement: keychains, earrings, or a pet collar with a bell on it
-
The doorbell sound when someone enters/exits a store (e.g. remember that episode of Family guy with Peter and the Dry Cleaner owner? He kept messing with the door, making it beep repeatedly?)
Even my intrusive thoughts are getting to me about becoming a nurse, i started thinking that heart monitors, all the repetitive beeping will keep me from wanting to work....i only had panic attacks as a child/teen and any repetitive noise i was able to either shut off or get away from, but this is a job that you cant just walk away from. I work in a hospital in a different position so im not really near those monitors but once i become a nurse, i WILL be.
Ironically, i listen to metal/sub metal genres and for some reason it DOESNT BOTHER ME AT ALL. But i guess because music is more fluid and not distorted, its acceptable to me.
Ive spoken with psychiatrists about misophonia and they dismiss it as soon as i mention. My family calls me crazy and im afraid until my hearing gets worse as i age, i will be stuck with this problem for a long time. What do you do when even imagining the sounds will trigger you just the same? Its not like i could simply forget a sound, i can only hope i never hear it again (nearly impossible)
Maybe some special earbuds that shut out background noise? Ive looked at eargasm brand for e.g.
This sensitivity has haunted me for so many years and ive tried my best to ignore through music but I would really like to hear from others about their experiences, any advice, or general support would be nice since i dont get it from family.
Thank you so much guys!
