A good diet plan includes things that will change your daily life choices when it come to food; when you eat, what you eat; how much you eat. Total deprivation of the natural person you are will make the transition back into “non diet mode” more difficult. Using the portion method can help develop discipline, consistency, and flexibility in meal choices.

Often times we have just become relaxed in our habits and are enjoy eating as part of a reward for hard work. Taking this away 100% may undercut our motivation to get through the difficult times, not that food should be a reward, but the flexibility to make food choices freely without health repercussions is. 

Starting off is always difficult and it’s not easy to go get all the items a dietitian may recommend for meal planning.  One way to prep your mind and body for the transition into a controlled diet is through basic portion control. 

Take what ever you normally eat and cut it in half. Eat the first portion knowing you may still be hungry when finished. Wait 30-40 min and if you are still hungry eat the remaining portion. After a week or so transition to using a slightly smaller plate still breaking meals in half. Then adjust again until you have reduced your calorie intake to a level where your body can bun excess calories without eating muscle gains.

While this process is going on you can evaluate how you can make better food choices at the grocery store and when you go out to eat. The 1/2 portion rule is excellent for eating out especially when portions are large. Eat 1/2 at the restaurant and the other half later at home.
