Good idea to selfhost a mailserver?

I'm thinking from time to time, if it's generally a good idea to selhosting my own email server for instance with mailcow on a VPS.

But i have some concerns about security, maintenance, reliability (domain reputation) and so on. I have no clue about how to secure the VPS/mailcow or things like SSH. I would have to trust and follow some random setup guides.

- I​s it worth it and will my email be more secure compared to other providers?

- how much maintenance will I have with this?

- would you recommend it for me as an average Linux user (not expert) to do this?
