Advanced learners: What single thing took your Chinese to the next level?
I’ve been studying Chinese for over 20 years, and I’m a little embarrassed to admit I just recently started doing something that’s helped more than anything else:
Recording myself speaking unscripted on camera for 3–5 minutes about random topics.
No script. No notes. Just hit record and talk.
It’s (sometimes) brutal, but incredibly revealing.
When I’m reading, listening, or doing drills, I feel fluent. But the moment I try to explain something abstract or tell a story from my week, I notice:
*I rely on the same sentence patterns.
*I avoid structures I’m not confident with.
*I understand higher-level vocabulary, but can’t retrieve it fast enough to use it.
*My transitions between ideas aren’t as smooth as I thought.
Rewatching the video makes the gaps obvious and gives me a concrete roadmap for what to improve next.
After 20+ years, I think I got comfortable consuming the language. This forced me back into discomfort…which might be exactly what I needed.
For those of you who are upper-intermediate or advanced:
What was the single biggest thing that helped you level up?
Not “everything combined,” but the one thing that made the biggest difference.
