Growing into Adulthood

[Rant/Vent, Advice OK]

First-time poster but I’ve been lurking on this sub for a long time, and wanted to ask if anyone else’s parents handled your transition into adulthood in a controlling, almost jealous way?

For context, I just graduated high school and have a long break before university begins, so I’ve been going out more frequently with friends. Even when I sometimes turn down meeting my friends to spend more time with my mom, (to be fair, these are not gatherings I would 100% enjoy, which is often also why I reject them) my mom often makes cryptic comments that I’m leaving/abandoning her.

On one hand, I empathise with her; as a single parent, it must be hard to cope with this change alone (spending 2 decades of your life raising a child and then have them become independent). But on the other hand I think it’s just a little strange to feel so strongly about this? Growing up is a process, I didn’t become an adult overnight, and she would have time to gradually process these emotions.

It sometimes feels as though she has never considered that I’ve grown up (she often makes comments like “to me you’re still a baby/underage”), which I never really took note of during individual occurrences, but have started to realise now that I’m older and crave more independence.

Honestly this feels like part of a bigger issue with me becoming increasingly more independent which I may post about some other day LOL but curious to know your thoughts/perspectives!
