Is haggling affected by the car I drive in with?

We have a nice car where the lease is expiring soon and a much older car. We are shopping to replace the nice one.

My wife thinks that if we show up at the dealership in the older car we will never get a good deal because they will think that we are desperate.

Is this true? Do sales managers take this into account?
