Best VPN for iPhone settings: Looking for real experiences

Ever since the latest iOS update, my iPhone battery has been draining like crazy. I finally tracked it down to my VPN, which seems to be constantly active, even when I think I've turned it off. The toggle in the settings is so sticky; I switch it off, but then a few minutes later, it's back on again, or the VPN connection is still showing in the status bar. It's incredibly frustrating, and I can't figure out how to make it stay off when I don't need it.

I have a time sensitive situation and I'm trying to pick something quickly without getting burned. I don't want to install something sketchy. I'm trying to figure out if this is a common issue with iOS and VPNs, or if there's a trick to properly disabling it without having to delete the profile every time.
