Chase locked my new account after mobile check deposit — wants “verified US phone” for issuer (issuer overseas). What’s the normal outcome?
Hey guys, hope you are doing well, I’m trying to figure out the most realistic way to resolve (or at least make sure the sender’s money doesn’t get stuck).
Situation
- My Chase account is new.
- I deposited a $1,700 personal check via mobile deposit.
- Shortly after, my account was restricted for potential fraud and I’m locked out of online banking.
What Chase told me (fraud/check dept)
- The restriction is because they need to verify the check by contacting the check writer/issuer.
- They said they can’t use the international phone numbers I provided (issuer is overseas) and need a verified US phone number for the issuer.
- They said they “couldn’t find a verified phone number to contact the writer of the check.”
- They also mentioned accounts like this can be closed in about 10 business days if not resolved.
Issuer side
- The issuer’s bank says they can’t reverse/recall it just because it was deposited; only the depositary bank can return/adjust the item.
- We got the issuer a US number using Tello, but caller ID shows “Wireless Caller” and I’m worried Chase won’t treat it as “verified/in her name.”
What I’m trying to achieve
I don’t even care if Chase closes my account. My priority is making sure the check gets returned/adjusted back to the issuer if Chase won’t verify it — and not stuck for a long time / “state/unclaimed” scenario (a rep mentioned something like that).
Questions
- Is Chase’s requirement for a “verified US phone number” for the issuer common for check verification?
- If the issuer adds a US phone number on file at their bank, does that help Chase at all, or does Chase require a number they can validate independently (carrier/CNAM)?
- In a restricted/closure scenario with a pending mobile check deposit, what usually happens to the deposit item: return/adjust back to issuer vs held until it clears?
- Any tips for what to ask at a branch to get a clear answer on the disposition (return/adjust vs hold)?
Thanks — I’m trying to handle this cleanly without making it worse.
