10 day trip in March

Wanting to experience both sides of Costa Rica over a 10 day trip in March 5 days Caribbean, 5 days pacific. Some questions as I plan this:

1. recommendations on renting a car. Do I fly into San Jose and drive to both coasts? Fly into one airport, rent a car and fly out of another? Is this safe?

2. LGBTQ Friendly? (Traveling with my husband)

3. where to stay on Caribbean side?

4. best place to stay on pacific side that isn’t overcrowded
