Being a 20-year-old D1 athlete means my life is usually governed by whistle-blows and strict schedules, but the dynamic with my head coach’s father—a massive donor to our program—has rewritten my entire playbook. He has this suffocating, authoritative aura that makes "no" feel like a forfeit, especially since he’s always hovering around our private training facilities. It started with him offering "mentor sessions" at his estate, but quickly turned into him demanding I serve him hand and foot after my morning sprints. While I’m bringing him his bourbon, he’ll "evaluate my muscle tone" with hands that stay on my quads far too long, always timing these interactions for when the rest of the staff is occupied at the stadium. He’s completely taken over my wardrobe off the track, banning my comfortable team sweats in favor of high-cut spandex and tight racerbacks that leave absolutely nothing to the imagination.
