My 7 yr old great dane sleeps in our bed and its killin me. Need advice

Q and Maybe Some A’s

Hello, some background. We got a great dane (1/4 cane corso) 7 years ago when our kids were old enough (6 and 4). From the outset i pushed against it, as we have unconventional careers that require travel and odd hours. Anyways wifey won and she was in charge of getting dog trained. This was the first time that we had both owned a dog from the training stage.

I found out later she had "missed" most of the training sessions when i was travelling for work. The dog was never properly trained and never learned to sleep in its own bed. Luckily, dog is very intelligent, learned to be housebroken etc., and very well mannered and chill, everyone loves the heck out of her.

After a few different attempts over the years at sleeping solutions, (dog in kids bedroom, dog on sofa) the current situation is the dog sleeps in our bed, basically between us. This is because the dog will find its way to our room any way possible at night and I get woken up anyways. If we blockade the dog outside our room, she will whine until we deal with her. Dog tends to follow me and as such sleeps against me. Most nights i have broken sleep because of this and it is causing problems.

Recently, i built a secondary bed at the end of our bed for her (same level as our bed) but she wakes up and crawls in with us.

I should note that part of the issue is that i run later hours than my partner and it is very common for me to come home and the dog is laying in my spot in my bed. Wife of course wants the company of the dog while im not there in evening. This has resulted in countless nights of me sleeping in the spare bedroom.

Worse, we are currently in a situation where dog is staying with friends while we are out of town, and she is now crawling in with them- and they are experiencing the same issues and I feel terrible. (We had a family member who was supposed to come stay with the dog but had to cancel at last minute, they know the dog well and have stayed with her at our house.)

Looking for advice.. can a 7 year old dog be trained to sleep in a dog bed and how do i go about this.
