Caregiving jobs to combat loneliness
So I just happened to think of this while responding to another post....For those of you Living Alone AND HATING IT....the silence, the empty space, the lack of friends, being touch starved, etc.
Has anyone considered seeking work (paid or volunteer) in a healing/caring profession? I've been on my own for a few years now and absolutely loving it, but even I need human interaction sometimes. But I think part of why I dont feel the need to constantly socialize or seek more connections, is because of my work in Healthcare. Obviously it can get emotionally draining, as I see people who are at their sickest. My coworkers are mostly pleasant but lots of different personalities. And of course dealing with doctors and nurses can be stressful. But...it can also be fun. Even my sickest patients make me laugh and are very appreciative. My coworkers are a riot even with work drama and management breathing down our necks. The nurses can be tough but fun to work with. Even the doctors can be kind and sarcastically funny. So I think i get my most (not all) of my social needs from my job. And my hobbies/special interests take care of the rest.
But I know many of you have office or work from home jobs. You may not see many people, or may not like the ones you are forced to interact with. Or others of you may have soul sucking low wage positions dealing with difficult people in customer service. Its not a "cure all" or anything, but perhaps worth considering for those who are severely struggling. And it doesn't have to be strictly Healthcare roles...massage therapists, elder care helpers/sitters, even dog walking or pet sitting can work. Also volunteers are desperately needed for community outreach services (homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, food drives, veteran care, etc,) Anything that can put you in a position to meet and interact with different people daily can be a big first step in dealing with loneliness
