parents won't let me live on campus for college
basically the title but i was born and raised as a JW, baptized for about 8 years now, and PIMO since I could think critically. but i still live at home and my parents are pretty devout so there's not much leaving for me rn. :/ i was fortunate enough to get accepted into my dream college that’s within commuting distance of my house, but my parents under NO circumstances will let me dorm. even though the whole update came out about education, practically everyone is still against living on campus because of all the “bad influences” that could come from it. it honestly feels so suffocating sometimes.
my parents just want me to commute even though i really want to dorm. i’ve been trying to soft-launch the idea of living on campus, but they keep shutting it down.
i’m fortunate enough to have my own car, but i don’t think i could just move out since i rely on my family financially. my main concern is being able to make friends and actually have a social life on campus. from everyone i’ve asked, they say it’s really hard to make friends if you don’t live on campus. i really want the full college experience like late-night study sessions, spontaneous hangouts, random food runs, all of that. i also want to experience nightlife once in a while, since i really didn’t get that in high school because of my strict parents. the school i’m going to is a small private one, so there aren’t that many commuters, especially freshmen.
has anyone here commuted and still managed to have a real social life? did you feel like you missed out? any advice on how to actually make friends and stay involved as a commuter would really help. i just don’t want to look back and feel like i never really got to experience college.
thank you :)
