Does anyone know of any early release builds of HL1 that came without WASD configured as standard?

I swear I remember my first time playing HL1 back in Jan of 2000 on a borrowed copy from my uncle and using the arrows to control everything but I don't recall setting it that way so I'm wondering if any version at all came configured that way. I know it was around the time WASD became standard but when exactly that was is beyond me.
