THE COMBATANTS:

Harriet Tubman

Born Araminta Ross in March 1822, called Minty by those who loved her, she entered a world that treated her as inventory. Enslaved in Dorchester County, Maryland, she inherited bondage through her mother, though her father was free. Law did not care for nuance. It cared for ownership. Edward Brodess, the man who claimed the Ross family, scattered them through labor so blood ties could not become resistance.

At thirteen, her life split in two. In a store, she refused to help capture a freedom seeker. An overseer hurled a two pound weight that crushed into her skull. She nearly died. For months she drifted between fever and death, the sun and moon her only clock. When she healed enough to return to the fields, she recounted “there I worked with the blood and sweat rolling down my face til I couldn’t see. The injury left her with seizures and prophetic dreams, experiences she understood as divine instruction for her to assist those like her.

Years later, fearing she would be sold to settle debts, now with a resource of wisdom from old slaves in her new land, she made her own decision. Beside her father and whispered routes shared among the enslaved, she fled north to Philadelphia. She returned to Maryland again and again, navigating the Underground Railroad, a series of safehouses for slaves to free those who’s worth was wrongly identified as a laborer. Leading dozens to liberty and never losing a passenger, even going to length as to threaten to put down those who would endanger their mission she was deemed “The Moses Of Her People”. During the Civil War she served as a scout, nurse, and spy for the Union, even guiding the Combahee River Raid that freed hundreds more.

The world would come to know her as Harriet Tubman. An abolitionist so notorious she racked up a bounty of over 1,573,000 in today’s earnings.

⸻

Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks was discipline and bravery wrapped in cotton steel, a seamstress whose stillness shook the nation. Born in 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama, and raised in Pine Level and Montgomery, she grew up in the America where Jim Crow was king, where buses, schools, and ballots were all designed to remind Black citizens of their assigned place. But Rosa, even before her major moment was a worker against this force. Long before December 1955, she was active in the NAACP, investigating cases of racial violence and working alongside organizers who believed the law could be confronted and not just endured.

On December 1, 1955, when a bus driver demanded she surrender her seat to a white passenger, Rosa Parks refused. Out of principle and the idea of “I was here first, why do they deserve the seat more than me?” She was arrested, and her arrest became an ignition to a kindling fire. Although she was the major pillar, Rosa Parks was not the first Black woman to refuse that humiliation. Months earlier, fifteen year old Claudette Colvin had done the same, resisting arrest and declaring her constitutional rights as officers dragged her away. Colvin’s courage deserves recognition, and is often overshadowed by Rosa, but these two women together exemplified the resilient attitude not many blacks at the time had the mind to show.

What made Parks’ stand transformative was timing, strategy, and collective readiness. Her case became the catalyst for the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a 381 day campaign that organized carpools, tested endurance of the transportation system without their economic help, and elevated a young minister named Martin Luther King Jr. into national prominence. The boycott ended with the forced decision of Supreme Court ruling bus segregation unconstitutional.

Rosa Parks didn’t need to shout or posture. She simply declined to cooperate with injustice, and in that refusal, she demonstrated that resistance does not always have to roar. Sometimes it sits down and refuses to be eroded by threat.

Playstyles:

Rosa Parks (Admittedly I was Stumped)

She is a Defensive Anchor Archetype. A Fortress / Counter-Pressure Hybrid. A character built around stillness, positional control, and punishing overreach. Her power “Parked” turns Rosa into an immovable force. This translates into gameplay with her Resolve Meter. Blocking, perfectly timed defensive inputs, refusing resisting grabs, these all charge her meter. The more the opponent tries to move her, the stronger her presence becomes. Making her health bar reduce slower and slower when she takes damage.

She uses short-range strikes, controlled pushes, and grounded stances. She excels at mid-range control and punishing impatience. She is able to go into a “Seated” mode, sustained by burning through her meter but making her damage reduction vanish, While rooted, she has super armor and cannot be pushed back by standard attacks. Opponents must commit to stronger options to reposition her, and those commitments carry risk.

⸻

Harriet Tubman

Harriet enters steady and focused, coat heavy, boots quiet. She fights with a short-barrel shotgun for mid-range dominance, a hidden blade for close encounters, and mobility tools that let her dictate when and where the fight happens. She is strongest when she is repositioning, striking, and vanishing before retaliation hits her doorstep.

Her passive trait, “Never Lost a Passenger,” rewards successful disengagement. If Harriet lands a hit and avoids damage immediately after for a short window, she gains a temporary movement and reload speed boost.

Her special ability, “Train Track,” manifests spectral iron rails beneath her feet. When activated, she leaves a trail of smoke and cinders as she dashes, moving at blinding speed across the arena. The smoke lingers briefly, obscuring vision and slightly slowing opponents who pass through it. She can cancel the dash into a shotgun blast or evasive roll, making her approach unpredictable.

When at a distance she does have a few zoning options to regather her tactile approach:

\- A measured shotgun blast that knocks opponents back at mid-range.

\- A flare shot that arcs upward and rains embers down, controlling vertical space.

\- A quick evasive slide that low-profiles incoming attacks before repositioning behind cover or smoke.

Harriet excels at forcing opponents to overextend. If they chase through her smoke, they risk eating a point-blank counter. If they hesitate, she chips them down from range.

Her Ultimate, “Combahee Raid,” is a cinematic where she makes her rush forward, dragging the enemy by their neck through a spectral line of tracks before tossing them up into the air. Buckshot. Reload. Buckshot. Reload. Buckshot. Reload. Knocking the enemy up three times before she crouches and charges her boosts, smoke flowing everywhere, the enemy falls down into a kick so devastating it takes the personification of being hit by a train and shatters the mist.
