John Doggett — That Fatherly Heart
In a recent (September 2025) interview, Robert Patrick talked about why John Doggett was such a meaningful character for him. He said he played Doggett as the kind of father he believes a man should be (around 30:20–31:10).
That honestly moved me more than I expected.
Doggett has always felt special to me. He’s not just tough or loyal — he has that deep, steady heart. The kind that doesn’t waver. The kind that stands its ground quietly. He protects without making a show of it. He doesn’t give up on people, even when they push him away. His sense of justice isn’t about ego; it’s about doing what’s right because it is right.
In many ways, he is perfect.
And maybe that’s why he’s always reminded me of my own father. Not because my father was perfect like Doggett (lol), but because to me, he was — at times — the one who protected in ways that weren’t always loud but were there.
When I watch Skinner, I sometimes feel like he’s the father figure of the team. But when I watch Doggett, it feels more personal. It feels closer to home.
Hearing RP say he approached Doggett with that fatherly heart just made something click for me. Sometimes we recognize something powerful in a character because we’ve already felt it in real life.
And sometimes, we’re just grateful for the moments someone showed us what that kind of strength looks like.
Thank you, Robert Patrick, for giving Doggett that kind of heart.
