Shooting through smoke mechanic

Hi! Is there a mechanic that lets you shoot through smoke accurately?! I keep getting killed while behind smoke constantly and I’m unsure if there’s something I need to counter for. I know the smokes are thrown properly (at the enemy) and that thermal can’t see through, since I’m using it on my gun, but I’m still extremely confused. On my “analysis” is almost always against PC players. Thanks!
