How I healed my heartbreak pain after 2 years of relationship

I’ve seen a lot of people in this subreddit struggling with low feelings and missing their ex after a breakup. So I wanted to share something that helped me deeply when I went through mine a couple of years ago.

I know how painful and difficult that stage can be.

For context, I’m 28 years old. I spent two years with my ex-girlfriend. We were from different countries, different nationalities. We traveled together, had so many adventures, learned each other’s languages. I learned hers, she learned mine. We built a lot together.

At the end, we decided to split ways because it was the smartest and wisest decision. She wanted to reconnect with her family. I wanted to reconnect with mine. Logistically, it became very difficult to continue. We were also fighting more in the last months. The feeling wasn’t the same.

So we talked and made the decision together. It was mutual.

But even when it’s mutual, letting go is brutal.

She went back to her country. I went back to mine. And that’s when the real breakup process started for me.

It was painful.

I used to see her every day. Suddenly, nothing. Nights were the hardest. So many memories. So much nostalgia. It felt like carrying heavy emotional luggage in my chest.

I tried different things. Therapy. Men’s circles. Deep conversations with friends who could understand and relate. All of that helped. It allowed me to release and expand my perspective.

But there was one specific tool that helped me enormously.

A very specific mental exercise.

You can relate it to meditation, but it’s focused on one thing: letting go.

Here’s how it works.

You put yourself in a relaxed state. Silence, soft music, or guided meditation. The goal is to relax your body and mind enough to access deeper emotions.

Then you visualize your ex in front of you.

And you say everything you need to say.

Everything you didn’t say. Everything you’re holding. No filters. Speak from your heart. In your mind, you create the space to finish things the way you wish you could.

You allow yourself to release.

And at the end of the meditation, you imagine them slowly walking away. Peacefully. With a smile. Letting go in a loving way.

That’s the exercise.

But here’s the real key.

You don’t do it once. You do it multiple times.

You’ll probably cry. You’ll probably open Pandora’s box. But that’s the point. You’re allowing those emotions to move instead of staying stuck inside you.

What you’re doing psychologically is closing a cycle internally instead of waiting for external closure.

For me, this was one of the most profound and healing experiences of my life.

That’s also why meditation became part of my daily routine. Not just for breakups, but for mental health, clarity, emotional strength. But that’s another topic.

I just wanted to share this in case someone here is going through something similar.

If you have questions, or if something wasn’t clear, DMs are open. I’m happy to help.

Wishing you strength if you’re in that phase.
