My 3rd Gen 4Runner Gas Guage Doesn't Read Correctly
Looking for some advice.
I’ve got a 1999 4Runner Limited 3.4L V6. The gas gauge reads FULL correctly when I fill up, and the needle doesn’t jump around or act erratic. But I consistently run out of gas at the same mileage when the gauge says I’m around half a tank.
It’s repeatable every time. No random drops or weird behavior.
From what I’ve read, it sounds like the fuel level sending unit might be worn in the mid-range section of the resistor strip. Does that sound right? Is this common on 3rd gens?
If so:
- Is it worth replacing just the sending unit?
- Or should I replace the entire fuel pump assembly while I’m in there?
- Anything else I should check before dropping the tank?
I got 240k miles on the car.
