AITAH for asking ‘too much’ of someone I considered a close friend?
I, (35F) have been friends with ‘Emily’ (35) for around 15 years, likely more, since college. Over those years I’ve truly never asked her for anything at all, truly, despite living super close to her. I remember around 2 years ago, I asked her if she knew any movers since I was moving and her dad used to work in the moving industry. fast forward to now, Emily sees a lot of theater shows because she has memberships to various programs in our big city. she usually goes alone or with her mom, she sees all of the top theater shows many times a year. she also goes to smaller shows too. Over the last 6 years she has invited me to 4 shows (I pay her back every time of course, but often the shows are very cheap due to her discounts). the shows she invites me to are at the very small theaters, off-off broadway type shows. She texts me after and tells me what shows she recommends so I can go see. Please keep in mind we used to message nearly every single day for years About various things about our lives, the news, hobbies, etc. The issue is we rarely see each other despite her living 10 min away from me. Last time I saw her was last March. A few days ago I messaged her and said ‘Hey, thank you for inviting me to a few shows over the years, I appreciate you thinking of me, if you ever see a good priced ticket for a bigger show think Of me! I knows you go often with your mom but I’d like to see a bigger show with you’ and the response I received was ‘Wow someone is entitled.’ Which floored me. I was just hoping to see her and spend time doing something we both enjoy. I askd how does that make me entitled and she said I expect things from her and then said she thinks I use her because of her car. I said what? I’ve never even been in your car Since you got it around Covid! She then said I asked her to drive her places. I said I literally remember the two times I asked her - in the spring and then summer of 2024 - once because she told me she likes to go to this mall that is a bit far from us where there’s a big TJ Maxx that she said was so good and supermarkets and a big Target. I asked her if she can take me next time she goes because the stores around us arent good, there is no supermarket near me and for me to get to this mall she likes would take 4 public buses and 2 hours but 25 min by car. she said why can’t I go myself? that Hurt but I thought maybe that’s just her special thing w her mom to do on weekends, I don’t know. Then months later my cat litter I ordered got stolen in my building. there are again no pet stores near me and I get it shipped from Target. she mentioned on text she was going to the mall again the day after and I said hey can yo take me Someone stole my cat litter and this would really help me out if you can drive me to get it. She again said no, why can’t I go myself? I rolled my eyes and just let that go. So this time she brought all this up again that asking her twice to go with her to that mall, I try to use her for her car. I said part of being a friend is helping people. She then told me that we don’t have that kind of foundational friendship that she would help me with anything, after all she has never asked me for anything ane She only helps people that deserve her help. I said we talk every since day and I’ve known her for 15 years, what is she talking about? I’m glad she doesn’t need any help from me, none that I can provide, anyway. she told me to just get a car myself. I blocked her On socials. She then texted me saying ‘wow you actually blocked me.’ I said I never thought of friendship as reciprocal. It was a wild ride. So, Reddit, am I crazy and truly acted entitled by asking her about the theater tickets?
