AITAH for making a snapchat story of my flooded basement that my MIL got offended by?
Kind of a rant, sorry for the lengthy read! I have since removed his mom from snapchat since this incident, because it’s just not worth it for me.
Some background, my husbands mom is helping us build our house. She’s a retired building manager so she helped us build a timeline and get the contractors contacted and scheduled, she was doing this to be nice and said she’d be hurt if we didn’t let her help us. For the most part, me and husband have been the sole project managers hands on at our house, there everyday, contacting the workers, being there to answers question, etc. MIL has been as present as she can be, but this isn’t her job so we expected to take the bulk of responsibility.
I, am “finding humor in sarcasm” type of person, not at the expense of others, in the sense that i’ll post my dog who shoved himself in a small box with a caption “you don’t fit there” or the aftermath of dropping a container of mayonnaise all over the floor with a caption “I don’t think that goes there”, stuff like that.
We had a HORRIBLE rain storm come through our area, it rained days on end, and everyone in the area was posting about flooded yards, roads, etc. We knew the storm was coming but didn’t know how bad it would be. The ball got dropped between everyone, my husband didn’t push his mom to get an excavator out there before the storm, due to this his mom didn’t push the excavator to get there, and the excavator put off the job thinking it would be fine. Well the backyard flooded, all the way up to our basement, as the incline hadn’t been established and dug. This caused our basement (which at this point was just concrete and wood) to partially flood. It was stressful but not the end of the world, me and husband spent 6 hours vacuuming up the water and hand digging trenches to get the water away from the house.
It being our house and trying to find the humor in a crappy situation, I posted a picture of our backyard completely flooded against the house with the caption “Well this looks fun” and then another picture of our basement with water in it with the caption “well this looks even more fun😂”. Again, light hearted, it was what it was.
That night my husbands mom called him and asked if he saw my snapchat story. He said yes. And she said it was incredibly rude and hurtful that I would post that, and it makes her look like a “terrible” builder (even though that is no longer her job and no one on my snapchat would even know who she is or that she’s helping us). She went on to say I shouldn’t be posting negative things about “her work” and people will see that and judge her.
Husband got off the phone and told me I should just remove the pictures, and I asked why? I told him it’s our house, why is what I post about OUR house being monitored be her. I told him it’s no reflection of her work, it was a freak rain storm and everyone in the area was having issues with flooding, it was just a way to make an unfortunate situation comical, and she doesn’t have a reason to take it personally. If she felt bad about it happening or something, she could just talk to us about it instead of calling me rude and trying to dictate what I put on my social media.
I ended keeping my stories up, but just unadded her from snapchat, and told my husband problem solved, now she can’t get offended about what I post.
So, AITAH for making a snapchat story of my flooding backyard and my MIL getting offended by it?
