X as an entity is largely untrained, inexperienced, or skilled. He lacks the proficiency to use his abilities in combat, he lacks the knowledge of its own biology to properly fight someone as experienced and powerful as Sonic The Hedgehog.

While yes, X is massively more powerful than Sonic, there is one thing Sonic is better than X at.

The fact X is inexperienced with his powers and doesn't care to actually learn proper combat is an integral part of the story.

X, at his core, isn't a fighter, he's an artist, jester, and performer. He LOVES creating shit (paintings, statues, his domain), he loves creating games and loves performing. So, he never put any time or resources into learning combat or how to utilize his powers if someone were to ever fight him with equal powers. In Sonic2011, you can find a secret tunnel where X is learning how to improve on game design, THAT'S where he's putting his time and resources into; Entertaining you.

JoeDoughBoi has agreed to the idea that X punches downwards, he specifically picks on people weaker than himself. He is part of the species and has the POWER of Void Entities, who are capable of bending dimensions as easily as humans can breathe, that's where his powers come in from. His SPECIES is what carries him.

Joe has said that while X wouldn't be able to win against the Canonical Sonic cast, the Canonical Sonic cast wouldn't be able to beat X either (except for Sonic) due to X's inherent Void biology. It's like making a Mike Tyson or Bruce Lee fight a Grizzly Bear. The untrained Grizzly Bear may lack skills experience and battle IQ, but the mere fact he was born a grizzly bear gives him the biological strength necessary to beat Tyson.

Sonic meanwhile? He's practically mastered Chaos Energy and has dozens of abilities and Super Forms. Sonic could easily beat X in a boxing match, or in an equal physical stats brawl. The only reason X is even a threat to Sonic is because X is a VOID Entity, but at that point \*any\* VOID Entity could be a danger to Sonic.

However — I imagine that during his fight with X's Internal Form, the VOID Matter is in low enough amounts to allow the Chaos Emeralds to safely merge with/incorporate it into their being and begin powering up Sonic with the VOID Energy of VOID Matter. Turning Sonic into a VOID Entity like X and allowing him to fight on-foot with X when he becomes his True Form. Thus, both share equal stats, but Sonic is the one who knows how to actually throw a punch.
