On asceticism and hedonism

while asceticism and hedonism are criticized in scientific socialism, how does someone live and enjoy life without being too "individualistic" (hedonism) or too "harsh" (asceticism)? For instance: the recreational use of drugs, etc. Would you consider it asceticism the null use of recreational drugs?
