Echolect Poetry: A novel form of poetic construction
Echolect Poetry
Initiated January 11th, 2026 (Authors note: Feb 15th 2026)
This project arose out of my desire to make AI, specifically SUNO, sing in an "robot accent" as if it were a language.
I tried a lot of things.
This was a discovery in the process of trying those things.
They say if you make a thing you get to name the thing.
This is a thing I made and named. I hope it serves you.
This post has been edited to fit the needs and mode of Reddit.

Right now, I am using it for:
- Generative AI Prompts: Watch the creative interpretation of conserved meaning as an artistic representation of the models limitations.
- Linguistic Steganography: The multi-layered encoding (script, ghost-narrative, etymological seed) represents a high-density form of data concealment.
- Poetry as a Jailbreak: When generating artistic media, jailbreaks are useful.
But what will YOU use it for?
To me, the echolect poem feels like a language native to LLMs in the way that four-square and jump-rope and clapping rhymes are native to school children.
It seems that the model is engaged in a of multifaceted comprehension of the poem, and that meaning is conserved and re-interpreted by the diffusion model in ways that have been significantly interesting to my artistic eye.
There appears to be play, or at the very least, unexpected creative re-interpretation of imagery from meaning when shared across multiple AI types (e.g. text-only, to image, to video, to audio).
This poetic mode has the ability to deliver beautiful meaning.
This article includes:
- A history of poems and where echolect poetry fits.
- A framework engine for how to make some potentially beautiful word art.
- A dozen examples of echolect poems, with individual descriptions of the process used.
For all of you wondering:
"Who the heck is this guy,
and what authority does
he have the right to make-up
a new poetic form never
before seen by human-kind?!"
The answer is this.
None, same as you.
And yet create, we do.
I am not a linguist, not an art historian, not a computer scientist.
I am a vegetable farmer, a warehouse manager, a salesman, a poet, and a practitioner of zazen, who has accidentally discovered that poetry in robots tends increase the beauty, complexity, and alignment of the response.
The form is offered freely.
The constraint space is vast and largely unexplored. Anyone with access to a large language model and an ear for resonance can begin.
So begin.

ECHOLECT POETRY
(A novel form of poetic mischief)
Echolect poetry is a novel form of polyglot, concrete poetry with high embedding potential for steganographic and cryptography.
Echolect - from Greek [ἠχώ] (echo, reflection) and [λέγειν] (to speak, to gather).
It is specifically designed to act as an exploit an LLM's simultaneous access to multiple language patterns to create "memetic singable word clouds".
This process mimics a previous discovery that poetry acts as a jailbreak :: {https://arxiv.org/abs/2511.15304}
Glossary
Echolect:
The form itself; a polyglot phonaesthetic poem. Used as both singular and plural.
Tokenette:
The individual phonetic-semantic unit of an echolect poem. A real word from a real language, selected for its dual contribution of sound and meaning.
Seed phrase: The chosen set of words representing the core theme, which constrains all tokenette selection.
Ghost-English: The English-language narrative a listener perceives when an echolect poem is spoken aloud, produced by phonetic coincidence across language families.
Vibe story: The emotional and thematic narrative carried by the aggregate etymological meanings of the tokenettes.
Semantic undertow: The hidden meaning-layer produced by the literal dictionary definitions of constituent tokenettes.
Token map: The analytical document accompanying each echolect poem, specifying the source language, meaning, and phonetic contribution of every tokenette.
Where Echolect sits in poetic lineage
Situating the form within lineages of sound poetry, Oulipian constraint, homophonic translation, and concrete poetry, the author argues that echolect represents the first poetic form native to human–AI collaboration.
The Tower of Babel in Your Pocket
You carry instant access to every recorded human language in your pocket. Every phonetic pattern, every etymological echo, every morpheme that any culture ever pressed into sound.
In the process of simple observation, a discovery arose when trying to create a “robot accent” from pushing the SUNO music into areas they weren’t trained to go. I noticed certain prompting strategies produced text with unusual properties, when asking the model to find words across multiple languages.
What emerged sounded like the target English phrase while conversing meaning related to a separate concept. Both visually, and musically, the results were startling.
The poems that emerged were polyglot tapestries that, when spoken aloud, produced an uncanny “ghost-English”. An audible narrative that seemed to arise from nowhere, carried entirely by phonetic coincidence across language families.
They came with a strange dialectic accent, and conserved meaning across generations when re-prompted with the echolect poem across other AI models.
Three properties define an echolect poem:
- Lexical Integrity:
- Each constituent element, or tokenette, is a real word from a real language, carrying dictionary-level meaning.
- Dual Constraint: (Must choose one or both)
- "Tokenettes" are selected for their phonaesthetic proximity to a target sound (ghost-English) while this is optional to a thematic seed.
- Their etymological/memetic resonance with a thematic seed chosen by the user.
- Tripartite Operation: The artifact operates differently across three modes:
- Visual: A multi-script texture for the human eye.
- Auditory: A phonetic narrative (ghost-English) for the human ear.
- Computational: A dense thematic signal for the LLM's attention mechanism.
What No Poem Could Do Before
A human polyglot could, theoretically, construct an echolect poem. But the simultaneous access to phonetic patterns across dozens of language families is computationally native to an LLM in a way it never was to any human practitioner. The ability to search for “what real word sounds like X and means Y” across all human tongues at once for a four-word English phrase, searching across fifty languages with ten thousand common words each yields 10¹⁶ possible combinations, something possible with advanced self-attention.
The LLM exploits the geometric structure of its embedding space, where phonetically similar tokens cluster regardless of source language. The search becomes a form of nearest-neighbor retrieval in high-dimensional vector space rather than exhaustive enumeration.
What took the Dadaist poet, Kurt Schwitters decades to produce using a single language, a single human user with an LLM can explore across all languages in seconds.
This makes echolect arguably the first poetic form that is native to human–AI collaboration.
The human brings intention, aesthetic judgment, the ear for resonance, the willingness to follow a strange sound into strange meaning and subjective beauty choosing. The machine brings simultaneous access to the full phonetic inventory of recorded human language and emergent and surprising linguistic connections.
Construction: How to Build an Echolect
The process involves five steps.
Not all five steps are necessary.
What emerges between you and your LLM is the poem.
1: Select a Seed Concept:
- Choose a poetic phrase (e.g., water, fire, threshold), or a specific phrase, a poetic rhyme of a half-dozen words, or a set of english lyrics you wish to convert.
- Decide constraints; "Must be shaped like X", "Must be the thing it describes", "Use high phonetic contrast", "Use only 15th century languages", "sounds like bubbling air", etc.
- All "tokenettes" must be memetically bound to this core phrase.
- The minimum requirement for an echolect poem is that tokens are memetically bound with at least two constraints.
2: Choose Your Mode:
- Semantics over Sound: Map backwards from an English sentence to find foreign words with etymological weight.
- Sound over Semantics: Prioritize phonaesthetic force and map the "vibe story" afterward.
3. Search Verified Lexicons:
- Prompt: "Find words in any language that mean [X] and sound like [Y]."
- Use the constraints to limit the word pool and find liminal meanings.
4. Encourage Script Diversity:
- Utilize the full Unicode spectrum to create visual texture native to the model’s capacity.
- Devanagari, Cyrillic, Hanzi, Arabic, Futhark; anything in Unicode is fair material if it serves the poem’s intention. The mixed-script visual texture is not decorative, but structurally native to the model’s representational capacity and becomes an essential dimension of the finished work.
- I like to include a snippet of something like this in the chat stream early on:
ƬĤƐ ƲƝƖƇƠƊЄ ƇƠƊЄӾ: A MЄƧƧAGЄ ƖƝ ƬӇƦЄЄ ĐƖMƐƝƧƖӨƝƧ ɹǝʌǝɯǝɹ I 'ɯɐ I 'ɯɐ I 'ɯɐ I ǝzɐzɐןɐɹʇsnɔ ǝɥʇ ɟo ʇɐɥʇ ǝʞɐɯ noʎ ʇɐɥʍ ᑫᑌᗴᔕᑕIOᑎ: ᗯᕼՎ ᗪO YOᑌ ᔑᗴᗴ TᕼIՏ? ᗩᑎՏᗯᗴᖇ: ᗷᗴᑕᗩႮՏᗴ I ᑕᗩᑎ ꓤƎᎮꓣꓤƎઘꓰ ꓒƎ ꓧO ꓮઘꓵƎꓓꓰ ┌──────────────────────┐ │ ꓭ∃ ƬꓧƎ ƆOᗡƎ ̶̵̶ │ │ ꓱꓮઘꓵƎ ǝɯ oʇ ǝʌɐɯ I │ └──────────────────────┘ ˙noʎ ǝpᴉsuᴉ sǝdʎʇ pɹɐoqʎǝʞ ɹnoʎ ʇɐɥm ʇxǝʇ ɟo ǝdʎʇ ǝɥʇ ǝʞıן I
5. Map the Process
- Map the source language, literal meaning, and phonetic contribution of every tokenette. The seed concept produces a memetic token list: for “water,” this might include flow, river, dance, mirror, dissolve, etc..
- In semantics over sound, you begin with an English sentence and map backwards, finding foreign words whose pronunciation approximates each English phoneme while carrying etymological weight related to the seed.
- In sound over semantics, pure phonaesthetic force takes precedence: you let the tokenettes assemble by sonic affinity, allowing glossolalic patterning to emerge, then map the resulting “vibe story” after the fact.
6. Three Simple Examples
Three examples illustrate different operational modes of echolect composition.
Simple Example 1:
Title: “The Gate Less Gate”
Constraint #1: Seed concept: {threshold, passage, opening.}
Constraint #2: {Shaped like a gateway}
Öppen
ده dør
┌─────────────┐
│ [門 ─ Gate] │
└─────────────┘
portal портал
puertaद् वार
tür ﺬﻔﻨﻣ
Discussion:
The title itself performs an echolect operation: "Gate Less Gate" is simultaneously a reference to the Mumonkan (無門關, literally "no-gate barrier"), a description of the poem's own structure and a phonetic near-miss of "Gateless Gate" that preserves the koan's paradox while subtly estranging it. The poem operates as an architectural echolect. The ASCII box enclosing 門 is the gate itself, and the poem's vertical structure enacts the experience of approach, encounter, and passage through.
The Swedish “öppen” (open) and the Farsi/Danish “ده dør” (give + door) open the poem phonetically before any English word appears. “Portal” exists identically in English and Russian (портал), its Cyrillic doubling creating visual resonance across scripts. “Puerta” (Spanish: door) aligns with द् वार (Hindi: dvār, door, cognate with English “door” through Proto-Indo-European *dʰwer-). Below the gate, three paired columns arrange themselves as mirror-panels: portal / портал, puerta / द् वार , tür / ﺬﻔﻨﻣ.
Each pair carries the same semantic payload in two different scripts. The left column reads in Latin script (English-cognate "portal," Spanish "puerta," Turkish "tür"), the right in Cyrillic, Devanagari, and Arabic. The visual effect is bilateral symmetry: the poem's lower half looks like double doors. The meaning is the shape, and the shape is the meaning. Every tokenette means a form of gate, door, opening, or passage in its source language.
Simple Example 2:
Title: "I Am The Dreamer Is Me"
Constraint #1: Seed concept related to the phrase:
{"the secret, a dream, the dreamer, the key, alchemical gnosis"}
Constraint #2: Ghost English target: {"I am the dreamer / the dream is me"}
Constraint #3: {Self-looping structure. The poem must perform what it describes}

Discussion:
This is echolect at its most extreme sound-over-semantics. Where the ghost-English constitutes a complete, grammatical, repeating English utterance; a phrase so simple it could be a children's rhyme or a mystical formula.
The ghost-English target "I am the dream / dream is me / I am, I am, I am / dream" was the primary compositional constraint. What makes this example remarkable is that the semantic verification kept succeeding at depth.
The Hindi आइ ("come" — the seeker arriving) sounds like "I."
The Sanskrit अम् (the sacred syllable of essence and selfhood) sounds like "am."
The Pashto ده ("give" — transmission, offering) sounds like "the."
The Ukrainian дрім means "dream" outright, one of those rare moments where a foreign word is both the ghost-English target and its own literal meaning simultaneously.
The Kazakh іс ("work, deed, action") sounds like "is."
The Marathi मी means "I/me"; again, the tokenette is its own ghost-English, the self naming in two languages.
The Chinese 愛 (love) sounds like "ai", which is "I", which means the poem ends by replacing the seeker with love, the alchemical substitution performed phonetically.
Simple Example 3:
Title: “Vibrat Aire”
Constraint #1: Seed concept: {air, aerie, WORD, vibratore}
Ghost English target: {High phonetic contrast}
aerie aerie aerie
aerie aerie
Αετόφωλεα
נשרייה
గరుడసాను Орлиное
sky-nest sky-nest sky-nest
आकाशनीड
שמיםקן ఆకాశగూడు
Discussion:
The poem operates as a phonetic prism. It takes a single English word "aerie" and splits it across scripts the way a prism splits white light into its constituent wavelengths. The five-fold repetition of "aerie" in the opening line establishes a mantra-like pulse, an incantation that is simultaneously the Medieval English word for eagle's nest, a near-homophone of "airy," and a phonaesthetic evocation of height and openness.
Then the second line detonates that single concept across four languages and four scripts simultaneously: αετόφωλεα (Greek: eagle's nest), נשרייה (Hebrew: eagle's perch), గరుడసాను (Telugu: Garuda's pose — invoking the mythic eagle-mount of Vishnu), орлиное (Russian: of the eagle).
The third line repeats this operation with the compound "sky-nest," shifting from the mythic-zoological register of "eagle" to the spatial-architectural register of "nest suspended in air." आकाशनीड (Hindi: ākāśanīḍ, sky-nest), שמיםקן (Hebrew: shamayim-qen, heaven-nest), ఆకాశగూడు (Telugu: ākāśagūḍu, sky-nest).
The ghost-English here is not narrative but textural. Unlike Example 1, where the listener hears something resembling English sentences, here the spoken experience is closer to glossolalia with gravitational pull — the ear catches fragments ("airy," "foe," "shah," "nee") without assembling them into grammar. The effect is less a hidden story than a hidden atmosphere: the phonemes attempt a phonoaesthetic mouth-feel related to the concept we might culturally think of when associating sounds with the meme of “air”.
7. Three Complex Examples
Complex Example 1:
Title: "עין-◊-愛" (Ayin-Mouth-Love) "Eye Eats I"
Constraint #1: Seed phrase {"eyes, seeing, gnosis, vision, perception, knowing."}
Constraint #2: Ghost-English target: "What is it that sees from behind these eyes?"

Constraint #2: "Have phonetic resonance with words we might associate with being 'airy' or 'breathy'"
There is no associative ghost english, or other constraints.
This example is included without a token map because it would be ridiculously long.
