Someone picked the wrong time to drive in the bus lane.

S

I get on the bus downtown. It drives around the corner to the next stop. Doors open, people board. Guy getting on stops dead in his tracks next to my seat... and falls over. He's having a seizure. Those of us nearest start doing what we can to help. One guy calls 911, I get down next to him and see that he's breathing and nothing nearby can hurt him, another guy tells everyone else to stay calm...

He eventually stops thrashing and lies there, nonresponsive but breathing, so we just keep waiting for help to arrive. It only takes a few minutes for 2 cops to arrive, and he wakes up just before they get there, so they help him off to wait for the medics.

And as he's getting off, a woman walks up outside. The doors are open, so we can clearly hear her asking how much longer the bus is going to be here because she's behind it and can't move. Wait a minute... we're in a bus lane! According to her, she drove into it by accident and couldn't get out. What should she do? Is there some way she can get out? How much longer is the hold up going to be?

Okay, if I accidentally drove into a bus lane, I would try to be as inconspicuous as possible and NOT draw attention to myself. I would NOT get out of my car, walk up to a bus that's just been approached by cops, and ask how much longer an obvious emergency is going to take! So I don't buy that.

I'd like to say maybe this will teach her not to drive in a bus lane again, but I doubt that, so I'll just share a hypothesis that riding public transit creates a sense of community and encourages helping each other, whereas driving makes people entitled and shortsighted.
