AITAH for telling my dad that God can’t heal my celiac disease?
I (18F) have celiac disease, which basically means my body can’t handle gluten at all. If I eat it, even by accident, I get really sick. It’s not a preference or a diet. It’s an autoimmune condition I have to manage every single day.
Living with it can already feel isolating. I have to read every label, be careful at restaurants, and sometimes bring my own food places. I’ve accepted that this is just part of my life.
My dad, however, is very religious. I respect that, but lately he’s been pushing this idea that if I just “have enough faith,” God will heal me. He’s said things like I should pray harder, that miracles happen, and that I shouldn’t “claim illness over my life.” He truly believes I could be cured through faith.
At first I tried to stay calm and just nod or change the subject. I didn’t want to argue about religion. But it started to feel invalidating. It made me feel like my very real medical condition was being treated like a mindset problem.
Last night it came up again at dinner. He said something along the lines of, “You never know, God could heal your celiac if you really believe.” I was already frustrated and honestly exhausted from constantly managing my food all day.
I snapped. I raised my voice and said, “God can’t heal my celiac disease. It’s an autoimmune disorder. I have it for life. I need you to accept that instead of acting like I’m just not praying enough.”
He got really quiet and looked hurt. Later he told me I was disrespectful and that I shouldn’t talk about his beliefs like that. Now I feel bad for yelling, but also frustrated because I feel like my reality keeps getting dismissed.
I don’t want to attack his faith. I just want him to understand that this is a real medical condition and not something that disappears if I’m spiritual enough.
AITA for getting so defensive?
