Every night at 2:17 AM, my upstairs neighbour moves furniture. The problem is….I live on the top floor. (Part 1)
I moved into this apartment three weeks ago.
Top floor.
Cheap rent.
Quiet building.
Too quiet.
The first night, I slept fine.
Second night too.
Then on the third night, at exactly 2:17 a.m., I woke up to a loud scraping sound above my ceiling.
Like something heavy being dragged across the floor.
I remember lying there, half asleep, confused.
Because there is no apartment above me.
I even checked the listing again when I moved in.
Top floor. Unit 6. End of the hallway.
No attic access.
No upstairs unit.
Just roof.
The sound stopped after about thirty seconds.
I brushed it off.
Old building. Pipes. Settling.
Normal stuff, right?
Wrong.
The next night, it happened again.
2:17 a.m.
On the dot.
SCRAAAAPE.
Slow. Heavy. Deliberate.
Like a couch being dragged across hardwood.
I sat up this time.
Listened.
It wasn’t random.
It sounded… controlled.
Like someone was rearranging furniture directly above my bed.
My heart started pounding.
I grabbed my phone and checked the time.
2:17 a.m.
Exactly.
The sound stopped the second I unlocked my screen.
Silence.
Complete silence.
That’s when I noticed something else.
My ceiling… creaked.
Not like old wood.
Like weight.
Like something was standing still right above me.
Waiting.
I didn’t sleep much that night.
The next morning, I asked the landlord.
He laughed.
Actually laughed.
Then said,
“You’re on the top floor.”
I told him I knew that.
I asked if there was attic access.
His smile dropped a little.
“There is,” he said.
“But it’s sealed. Has been for years.”
I asked why.
He didn’t answer.
Just changed the subject and asked if my heating was working.
That night, I stayed awake.
1:59 a.m.
2:05 a.m.
2:12 a.m.
Nothing.
Then my phone buzzed.
2:16 a.m.
And right as the minute changed…
SCRAAAAAAAAAPE.
Louder than before.
Longer.
Slower.
Directly above my head.
But this time…
it didn’t stop.
It kept moving.
From my bedroom ceiling…
to my hallway ceiling.
Then above my kitchen.
Like something was walking while dragging something heavy.
And then—
It stopped directly above my front door.
I stared at the door, frozen.
Because at that exact moment,
someone knocked.
Three slow knocks.
From the OUTSIDE of my apartment.
At 2:17 a.m.
