Questions on "Liberal Socialism"

Effort Post

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but I'll do so anyway and I hope it is somewhat edifying.

It's such a shame that socialists have become so illiberal and anti-democratic. There's always been that strain in the movement obviously, but I feel like a liberal strain has always existed too. For example, take John Stuart Mill the legendary liberal philosopher often quoted even by 'classical liberal' right-wing grifters. This guy was incredibly influential for liberal thought arguing vehemently in support of freedom of speech, press, and expression, against the extremes of both elitist and majoritarian tyrannies, whilst conceding pragmatic policy implementation based on utilitarian calculus, e.g., conceding the necessity of quarantine laws in major disease outbreaks which, though obviously infringes strongly on liberty are necessary to protect other people's liberty to not die from diseases (I feel like if you showed this to any magatard or 'right-libertarian' grifter they would lose their shit).

However, he also explicitly supported a socialism of the market-variant, stating:

All this whilst explicitly denouncing the state-socialist or centrally-planned models that came to predominate 20th century socialism, writing "While I agree and sympathize with socialists in this practical portion of their aims, I utterly dissent from the most conspicuous and vehement part of their teaching—their declamations against competition." So what results is a variant of socialism which is still respectful of representative democracy, pragmatic policy concessions, and market forces.

Do these kinds of socialists still exist, and if so do y'all think there are any popularisers or media people who represent this thought? I used to think Vaush did (and I still hope he does, for all his faults) since he has always maintained socialism to be the logical fulfilment of liberalism. However, his recent anti-democrat turn has been quite sad to see. During Destiny's debate with Connor, Pisco, and Econoboi, I think destiny said that Econoboi is one of the okay socialists that the pro-dem media space can work with.

That's also another interesting question I guess, do you think that socialists of this variant are welcome in the democratic coalition? Moreover, could it be good for this liberal socialist strain to be revived so as to counter the regarded state of the modern left and offer a more pragmatic and reasonable alternatives?

Thank you in advance for any comments, and have a blessed day!
