What was daily life like in Le Chambon-sur-Lignon under Nazi-Occupation?
Upon reading secondary literature around Le Chambon, pastor Andre Trocme his pacifist outlook dominate the historiography about the plateau. But what was daily life actually like for Jews, both foreign and French? Of course, it is difficult to answer with certainty, especially as many works draw on the papers of Andre himself. However, surely his biblical readings, his sermons, his ‘intransigence’ must have translated into some internalised form of resistance for the Jews. With how much certainty, if any certainty, can we say that Jews in Le Chambon consciously saw themselves as ‘weapons of the spirit’ and ‘defying the Nazis’?
