My partner and I found an Art Deco engagement ring that I absolutely love, but I’m nervous about committing to something this old.

It’s about 100 years old, 18k white gold, priced at $9,250 before tax. The center stone is a 1.37 ct oval, J color SI2, GIA certified and hand cut. There are 14 halo stones totaling about 0.42 ct, H color. I did notice that one of the halo stones looks visibly darker than the others… see pic

I want this to be a daily wearer, but I’ve never owned vintage jewelry before and I’m worried about the long term durability, especially the prongs and band. I know 18k white gold is softer, and I don’t really know how to tell the difference between normal age and actual structural wear.

For those who own or work with vintage rings:

\- How do you properly assess the integrity of the band and prongs before buying?

\- Is this something any reputable jeweler can evaluate, or should I specifically look for someone who specializes in antique pieces?

\- What kinds of reinforcement are reasonable without ruining the character or value, like retipping prongs or reshanking?

\- Are there red flags that mean a piece like this should not be worn daily?

\- Should I be concerned about the one darker halo stone?

Is this worth the price?

I love the idea of owning something with history. I just do not want to regret it a year from now if it turns out to be too delicate.

Would really appreciate insight from people who have experience with vintage pieces.
