Anyone else feel bad for buying anything even when you're adhering to your own rules/shopping goals? How do you distinguish between a good/normal purchase and addictive behaviour?
TLDR; allowed to buy myself some items from my needs/long term wishlist this week. Even though I adhered to all my rules I still feel bad about buying them. Have you experienced it and how have you dealt with it? Where is the line between simply buying and feeding your addiction?
I am doing a no-buy/low-buy and it is going allright. I am still figuring out the exact rules and duration but I decided to start regardless because otherwise I will just postpone it until I have the most "perfect" rules figured out.
This week I made multiple purchases that were on my list of things I was allowed to buy. Some of them were on the list for a long time. I am planning to move out soon and am slowly buying necessities over time so I don't have to do it all at once. So I did not want to impulse purchase but rather wait until I found things that truly fit my needs and taste for a good price. This week I bought 3 hand towels and oven mitts (1 pair). Completely according to my own rules, good prices and a reasonable amount (instead of buying like 12 hand towels at once).
I was also allowed to buy body wash. I'm still "project panning" my mothers stash because she had a lot that she did not want anymore. So I haven't had to buy it myself in ages and actually succeeded in not buying! I made the promise to only but it once I was down to the last half of the last bottle. Which I have done. I now did buy like 8 bar soaps at once but only because it was a very good deal (~70% off) and that was the minimum quantity I could find for any deals for the soap that I like. At this moment I am not in a financial position where I can just casually decide to pay more than double the price for 1 bar soap just so I don't have to buy multiple at once. And I am again now not allowed to buy any new soap until I'm down to the last half of the last bar, which will probably take a year at least.
So I did not break my rules nor my budget but somehow it still does not feel right. Have been thinking about this the whole day and I can't really figure what exactly is making me feel this way. Has spending any money at all just become so negative to me? Was it the 8 bar soaps? Was it the idea that I cannot "hunt" for the prettiest towels and oven mitts anymore because I now have them?
I am thinking all of the above and am not sure how to deal with it. I even caught myself thinking of returning the items so I can still keep hunting for even cuter home items.. Even though I absolutely adore the ones I got, I took 2 years (maybe even a bit more) to find these items and they fit my wishes exactly. Which sounds crazy now that I am typing it, they're just towels and oven mitts at the end of the day. They would have worked just as well if they were not my favorite color or a cute pattern but I just had to keep going to find the most perfect items.. (yes, I have ADHD for anyone wondering).
I guess I am posting this to ask if anyone has had the same experiences, and how do you deal with it? How do you distinguish a good/normal purchase and addictive behaviour? Thank you for reading all this rambling of mine.
