Why I always pray for a top bunk in hostels.

I know some hostels let you choose which bunk you book, but I was not the picky type UP UNTIL RECENTLY. I was on my first night in Dublin when I had this experience happen involving a belligerent, drunk idiot, stumbling back to our 12 person dorm with curtain style bunks. I was sound asleep dreaming of Guinness and the Irish countryside, when I was awoken by a lot of crashing and muttered cursing. Unpleasant? Yes, but it’s hostel, drunk fools are a dime a dozen, so I tried to block it out and find sleep once again. I could faintly see the silhouette of this fella stumbling around the room as he stared into peoples bunks while talking to himself. He started to make me uneasy when he wandered over to my side of the room and just stood still for quite some time. It was quiet for a while, so I tried to relax and fall asleep again, thinking he had finally tired himself out and passed out on the floor. My eyes are closed and I’m starting to drift off when suddenly I feel a half naked body slam through the curtain onto my face. Immediately I jump into fight or flight mode and push him off of my body as I try to get into the most defensive position I can muster in a cramped capsule style bunk. My adrenaline is absolutely spiking in this moment and I think I’m about to have a full on brawl with this idiot. I fully pull back the curtain and stare him in his eyes as he picks himself off the floor and wavers slightly as he stands. As I fully see him, I can tell that he is COMPLETELY off his ass drunk and most certainly blacked out. In order to defuse the situation I decide to just slam my curtain shut and say nothing more, even though he was softly (and incoherently) cursing me out. Finally, I hear him collapse into his bunk and start snoring obnoxiously loud (of course). I immediately got all my stuff, went down to the front desk and demanded another bunk, making sure this time it was a top. What a welcome to the wonderful city of Dublin.
