People's egos in a reading

I just had the most uncomfortable reading I've ever done for someone.

A couple came in asking for a reading on how to navigate a transitional period in their lives and in their relationship. I could immediately feel that it was going to be a weird reading so before I even pulled cards, I asked how much honesty they could handle bc my cards dont pull punches. They said they were open so I explained the process and went ahead.

I pulled the ace of swords reversed, 10 of cups reversed, and the page of swords upright. I advised them to first find the truth in themselves of what they want in this next chapter bc there was dishonesty within the relationship that was leading to feelings of dis-ease in the home. I focused on trying to deliver the message with gentleness bc the energy was already guarded from the both of them. I really tried to hammer home that being honest with themselves and each other is what is going to get them through this next phase, and said that any reversal can be flipped around with intentional action.

She then said that the 10 of cups was upright from her perspective so that must not be true, and tried to tell me that I was reading the cards wrong. I obviously said that I'm the one reading the cards and that they're reversed to me, so thats what they're telling me. Her husband also agreed and said my perspective of the card is the one that mattered since they were paying ME to do the reading.

Ive never had someone outright insult me like that during a reading or have their ego get so in the way of receiving a message. It was honestly hilarious and I laughed when they left. But im curious - how do you guys deal with these kinds of situations?? How do you handle a person paying you for a reading and then refusing the message that comes through?
