Question regarding follow up care for those with urostomy.

Urostomy

Hi looking for advice from fellow urostomy peeps!

I've had mine 6 and a half years. When I was going in for surgery the main complication I was warned about in the literature was reduced kidney function or potential kidney failure over time.

My question is does anyone have any follow up on this? Like should I be having yearly blood tests to check my kidney function or anything like that?

The reason I ask is I was very poorly after my surgery and had post operative psychosis that went on for a long time and as a result I was sectioned and hospitalised for 10 months. I don't remember my recovery or any medical advice. I slowly came back to "normal" (whatever that is lol) and following my discharge just kinda got on with it. I have seen the stoma nurse a handful of times but it's more a case of I ring them and try to get an appointment if I have any major issues or need a change in prescription.

My technique for bag changing and how I manage with the stoma has mainly been self taught online as my memory of any medical input is pretty much none... I guess also a positive is I don't have any memory of post surgical pain or the complications I only found out 5 years later when I read my notes that I had sepsis and was medically unwell after the surgery but have no recollection of this.

Anyway... Does anyone (particularly in the UK) see any doctor at any point following urostomy surgery or have any tests to check kidney function? Just wanted to make sure I wasn't not doing something that is advised! As far as I'm aware I have no consultant anymore and I'm not under the care of urology - should I be?

Thanks in advance🙏🏻
