TR1000 Step Loop feature

Can anyone dish out any insight on the Step Loop button? I’ve been using it and it’s cool, but i was wondering if there is anything else to it than change frequency of the loop. Also, there’s 4 buttons lit up on the step sequencer - what are these? Sometimes it loops and sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes it just pauses the sequence. What is going on here?
