Recommendations on towns or even a specific Airbnb/Vrbo? Flying into LIR

Been lurking in this sub for a while. We are visiting in July and flying into LIR. We will be renting a car. I have read to avoid Tamarindo. Looking for a less crowded beach town. Considering Playa Hermosa, Samara Beach, and Playa Flamingo. Also open to recommendations on excursions, how driving is (coming from US), and any general tips. Thank you!
