I think Steve should be reinvented as a character generally, but this is the number one alteration that I think should be made.

Specifically, I think he should be a transgender man and I think he should be masculine presenting on HRT and with top surgery, although I don't really have an opinion on whether he should have phalloplasty or not.

I think this change would provide an opportunity to explore transgender issues in Amazon culture in more depth. Like do the Amazons of Themiscyra acknowledge trans identities? A question that has only lightly been addressed before. And if so, do they think trans men are equally complicit in patriarchal violence against women or do they acknowledge them as equal victims of patriarchal violence? And if the latter, then are trans men exempt from the no-men rule of the island? Or even more interesting, are there trans masc Amazons?

It would also create a context to understand how and why Steve doesn't objectify Wonder Woman and the other Amazons the way other men do. Because he would possess an empathy for the experience of women as someone who has been subjected to that experience in his early life that a cis man fundamentally couldn't relate to.

And none of that is even to mention the desperate need for queer representation and diversity in DC comics alone.
